I studied this piece in my young college years and I loved it right away. The poem Schubert used has the vocalist express 4 characters: Narrator, Father, Son, and Erlking (a mythical boogeyman). You can tell 'who' is singing by the range of the voice, words that are spoken, and style used. In this video the lyrics are written in italics when the alluring Erlking speaks to the boy.
