My Monday: The Riddle Song sung by Joan Baez

I've always loved this song that I think I learned in Elementary School Chorus. Ms.Hilton, my elementary music teacher, did a wonderful job of giving us a variety of musical experiences and exposing us to many types of music. I love repetitive verse lyrics where something small changes each time. Songs like this can be sung, at least partially, the first time you hear it. This song offers the answer to the riddle making the lyrics especially enjoyable. This video has stills of the great folk/pop/rock singer guitarist.

I gave my love a cherry
That had no stone
I gave my love a chicken
That had no bone
I gave my love a story
That had no end
I gave my love a baby
With no crying.
How can there be a cherry
That has no stone?
And how can there be a chicken
That has no bone?
How can there be a story
That has no end?
And how can there be a baby
With no crying?

A cherry when it's blooming
It has no stone
A chicken when it's piping
It has no bone
The story that I love you
It has no end
A baby when it's sleeping
It's no crying.
